Welcome to our class on the web!  We hope you enjoy your visit.  This site was designed to help keep families updated on our accomplishments throughout the year, as well as share important information about our classroom. 

The books along the side will help you navigate through our site.  There are many great things to see.  Some pages are not shown in the navigation area, but links from various pages will take you where you need to go.

5/4/2008 We have another busy week ahead of us. Our final book order for this year is due on Thursday, May 8th. Let's have a great week!

4/25/2008 Students worked very hard on their NWEA tests this week. We have one test remaining which will be taken the second week in May.
On Tuesday we will be doing Earth Day activities with the naturalist from Fontana.

4/21/2008 We will begin our spring NWEA testing on Monday. Students will be taking 2 of the 4 tests this week with the remaining 2 to be taken next week.
Reminder that we do have early dismissal on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

4/11/2008 Thursday, April 17th, those students who missed the Lifetouch Photo opportunity will be bused over to East to have those redone. Be sure the permission slips are returned before then.
Friday we will be traveling to UNI to see "Paul Revere's Ride." Students will need to bring a sack lunch that day.
The playground continues to be muddy and with more rain on the forecast, boots are a must for recess. Please be sure you have them, along with your other outdoor gear.It isn't quite no coat weather.

4/5/2008 Spring has finally arrived! Hooray!!
Our spring concert will be Tuesday night at the High School. We look forward to seeing all of you. I know the students have been working hard and are excited to show off a little.

3/9/2008 Thank you to everyone who made it in for conferences. I know the roads on Monday were a bit unfriendly.
Remember, we will have a full day of classes on Wednesday- It is NOT an early dismissal. Also on Wednesday we will travel to the high school to view a sneak preview of the musical The Suessical.

Reminder: Tuesday, Feb. 19th we'll be doing our spring pictures with Lifetouch. Be sure to send back the flyer with your choice of pose. Also, don't forget to return your study sheets on Monday to earn some extra credit for you science test.

2/9/2008 Well, the crazy schedule has continued unfortunately. I am still holding our for a regular week! We should be finished with our ITBS testing Monday morning. The students have been doing a great job despite the craziness of last week's weather.
Remember we have early dismissal on Wed. at 1 p.m.
We will be having our Valentine's Celebration on Thursday from 2:25 to 3:00. Students may bring in Valentines - I do ask that students who choose to do Valentines that they have one for everyone.

2/4/2008 ITBS testing will begin on Monday. Students will be testing each morning from 8:30 - 10:00 approximately. It is extremely important that students arrive on time, as they will not be able to enter the classroom in the middle of the testing session. Be sure students get plenty of rest each night and have a proper breakfast each morning. Thank you to all the families who are providing our snacks and juice this week.

1/26/2008 Is anyone else thinking of thoughts of spring? A nice day with above 0 temperatures is on my immediate wish list.
We will be visiting the care center on Wednesday.
Also note that ITBS testing will begin next Monday. We have been doing some work to prepare for this over the past several weeks. Please be sure that students are getting plenty of rest. Reminder notes for those families who signed up to provide us with healthy snacks and juice during the week of tests will be coming home this week. The class thanks you in advance for this support from home.

1/21/2008 What a winter! Hopefully we will be able to have a normal day tomorrow! If not, please remember we have early dismissal on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
Due to the craziness of last week, midterms will be going out the end of this week. Be on the look out for those. Remember to sign and return them as soon as you can. Thanks!

1/14/2008 Well, I'm hoping we will have a normal schedule for this week. Let's cross our fingers that Mother Nature plays nice!
Book orders are going home this week. They will be due back on Monday, Jan. 21.
Midterms will be going out the end of this week. Be on the look out for those. Remember to sign and return them as soon as you can. Thanks!

1/7/2008 The video tape of our Reader's Theater performances is now in circulation. We are going alphabetically through the class, so be on the look out for that tape to come home.
Reminder we have an early dismissal on Wed. Jan. 9th at 1 p.m and there is NO SCHOOL on Fri. Jan. 11th for professional development.

12/31/2007 I hope everyone has been enjoying the break. I know I have! I am anxious to see you all on Thursday - Be sure to bring all your winter gear for recess, you'll definitely need it!

12/23/2007 Just wanted to do a quick update during break. We want to thank all of our parents and relatives who were able to come to our Reader's Theater performance on Thursday. It was wonderful to see you all!

11/12/2007 We have a busy week ahead of us again this coming week. We will be finishing up our NWEA tests with Language on Monday and our final test, Science, on Friday.
Remember - Wednesday is an early dismissal at 1 p.m.
Also, if you have not returned your conference confirmation slip please do so as soon as you can. I will be posting the schedule here on the website by mid week.
11/4/2007 We have a busy week ahead of us this coming week. Monday we will begin taking the NWEA assessments with our first test in reading. Our math portion will be on Thursday.
On Wednesday we will take our first trip to the care center to play BINGO with the residents. Be sure to ask your young people abou the new friends they will make on that day.
10/28/2007 We had a great week for Character Counts last week. Congratulations to Madi for being our Kid of Character. Congratulations to Paige, Eian and Melissa also for being nominated by their peers for their respectful behavior.
The weather has definitely gotten cooler, please encourage your young people to dress appropriately. Several students were caught unprepared for the brisk temperatures at recess last week.
Thank you for sending back your conference slips. If you still have yours, please get those returned as soon as possible - Mrs. Anderson will be starting to set the times very soon.
Wednesday will be our Halloween Celebration. Thank you in advance for all the families who volunteered to help out with this.
10/20/2007 This week is Character Counts and Red Ribbon Week. Students will be taking part in several activities to promote good character and the importance of leading a drug free life. Be sure to talk with your students about our special projects this week.

9/3/2007 I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. I enjoyed spending time with my family. I hope the students shared with you our new upcoming project. We will be putting a package together to send to our Florida pen pals. If anyone has blank Iowa postcards they would like to donate to the class for this project we would really appreciate it!

8/27/2007 We had a great first week despite the warm weather and the rain on Friday! We have jumped right into our learning adventure for the year and are off to a good start. I enjoyed meeting all the parents on Monday. I hope you will visit our classroom as well as our home here on the web.
8/20/2007 Welcome to a new school year! I am so glad I got to meet most of you tonight. I am looking forward to an awesome year! Remember that we have early dismissal Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week with a full day of school on Friday. Be sure you know where you need to go after school. Also don't forget to bring your water bottle as it will be very warm in our classroom.
8/14/2007 Well, I've been working feverishly to correct our site! On Sunday I clicked the wrong button and reformated the entire site! Most of the pages are fixed,but there are still a few that need correcting. Please bear with me while I try to get everything back in shape. I have put up a new guestbook as our old one had some issues due to spam.

7/1/2007 I hope everyone is enjoying their summer vacation so far! I am working on some changes here on the web site. Please bare with me for the sections that are under construction. Have a great Fourth of July!
6/13/2007 Summer vacation has officially arrived at my house. Last week saw me working with the other k-5 teachers writing our new language arts and social studies curriculum, as well as clearing out the classroom for summer painting. I will be starting some revamping of the site this month, so please bear with me as the changes progress. I hope everyone is enjoying their vacation so far. Happy summer!
5/27/2007 Can you believe it is the last week of school! I hate to say good-bye to the class, but I know they are ready to move on. The class has made their final goals for the year in Accelerated Math and with their independent reading, so we will be having ice cream and pizza this week. Students may bring a drink of their choice on Thursday to go with their pizza, and I will be purchasing ice cream on Friday with their lunch.
As the end of the year rapidly approaches, please be on the lookout for books and other materials that belong to the classroom. Also, all school library books were due last week, we do have a few stragglers so please get those turned back in. Thank you so much with your help getting things sent back to school. Should you find anything over the summer, you can drop it off next fall.
5/20/2007 Track and Field day is this Wednesday, May 23rd from 8:30 - 12:30. We hope to see many of you there. I see there is a chance for thunderstorms/rain on Wednesday. Should we have to postpone, Track and Field would then be held on Friday, May 25 at the same time.

5/13/2007 Students need to bring a small box(shoe box or kleenex sized)on Wednesday to bring home their clay project from art.

5/6/2007 We have another full week of activities going on in fourth grade. Remember, this Friday, May 11th is the deadline for lunch reservations for our Track and Field day. You can call those into Mrs. Hess in the office.
Wednesday is early dismissal at 1 P.M.
Be sure to check out our honors pages the students are doing a phenomenal job with both their math and reading. We have an extra incentive going to keep our momentum going.

4/29/2007 It is unbelievable that the first of May is this week! My goodness how quickly this year has flown by! We will bid a sad farewell to Mrs. Quigley, our student teacher on Friday. We have really enjoyed having her in our room and wish her the best in the future.
Students brought home a letter explaining the new set up for our annual Track and Field Day held at the end of the year. Please get your reservations for lunch in as soon as possible. The deadline for those reservations is Friday, May 11th. The students are excited about all the events. We look forward to seeing you then.

4/16/2007 Hopefully this week will be calmer than last week! Third trimester midterm grades will be sent home today. Please try to return them by Wednesday. If you have any questions, please contact me.

3/30/2007 It will be a fast week next week. Remember we do not have school on Friday, April 6 or Monday, April 9th for Spring Break. I hope everyone enjoys their long weekend.

As you know, the students at West are raising money for the Pennies for Patients Fund. So far we have raised a total of $1,070.88. The students (and staff) enjoyed Mr. Lyons getting creamed at Friday's assembly. We still have one more week to bring in those pennies. We are so very proud of the children's willingness to step forward and help others.

3/25/2007 The weather is turning nicer-thank heavens! Although it is tempting to started dressing for hot days, students should continue to bring boots and heavy coats or sweatshirts for recess. Layering clothes is the best solution as we can always take off a layer or two if it does get warm. A note will be sent home when boots are no longer required on the playground.

Students are participating in the Pennies for Patients fund drive. We will be continuing the drive for two more weeks. We are so proud of the way our students here at West step up to help those who are in need.

3/18/2007 Hurray- some spring like weather has finally arrived! Along with the nice weather, Mrs. Quigley, our student teacher, as also joined us. We are very happy to have her in class.

3/9/2007 We had a very busy week. Thank you all you made it in for conferences. I enjoyed visiting with each of you.
We held our Read-A-Thon today. Students who forgot their envelopes may still return them next week. Remember, this is a way for us to raise money to purchase new books for our library. We appreciate your support with this. Also, the Life Touch photos that went home earlier this week also need to be returned next week. Please send the money or the pictures back to school.
On Tuesday, Mrs. Quigley will be joining our classroom as a student teacher. We are looking forward to having her in our class.

3/2/2007 My what a week of weather! Reminder that conferences are Monday from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:00p.m. As soon as I can get into school I will post the current conference times. Should you have a problem or a question about your time, please email me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. It is doubtful I will be able to get to town before tomorrow, so please bear with me.
2/24/2007 Despite some harsh weekend weather we have another busy week ahead. Students will be participating in our Read-A-Thon on Friday to raise money to purchase new books for our library. We have several fun activities planned. Look for a letter coming home Monday with more details.
2/18/2007 We have another busy week ahead. On Tuesday we will be having pictures taken by LifeTouch. This is the same company who came in and did pictures for us last Spring. A reminder notice will be coming home Monday with more information.

Please note that we have early dismissal on Wednesday.

On Friday we will be going to see The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe performed at the BlackHawk Community Playhouse. We will be leaving approximately 8:45 and returning at 11:15. You do not need to send a lunch as we will be back in time to eat here at school.
 
2/12/2007 We have been very busy in the classroom this past week. We sent our our Valentine's cards to 21 classrooms, along with 3 children's hospitials as part of the "From Me to You" on-line project. We've already received some cards from around the country as part of this project. I have put up a new page to share the responses we receive. You can get to our "From Me to You" page through our student pages.

The class will be holding a Valentine's celebration on Wednesday. Students are welcome to bring in cards for each member of the class if they wish. Thank you to the families who have volunteered to provide refreshments.

Conferences are fast approaching. Schedule sheets will be coming home this week. Please be sure to return those as soon as possible. I look forward to visiting with each of you and sharing the progess your children are making.
 
1/28/2007 BRRRR! It's cold outside! Be sure to dress warmly this week, it looks like the artic weather has reached us. Extra gloves might be a good idea to replace the wet ones from morning recess.

We are geared up for another busy week in fourth grade. The students are very excited as we will be "boarding the train" in social studies for our northeast tour- Be sure to ask your student about their favorite site on our trip.

We will also be taking part in an online project put together by the eduactors for Technospud Projects. Students will be creating a brochure of information about our city, state and school to send out to 21 other elementary schools along with 3 charitable organizations. Check back next week for more information about this project.

1/22/2007 Basic skills testing went very well last week. Thank you all for your support at home and the healthy snacks that were provided by some of our families.

1/13/2007 Iowa Tests of Basic Skills will begin Monday morning. We will be testing each morning this week. It is important to get a good night's sleep and eat a healthy breakfast so that students are able to do their very best on the tests.

Winter has finally appeared! With snow now on the ground students will need to be sure to bring their boots for recess. Be sure to dress appropriately for the cold temperatures- hats and mittens along with heavy coats. Last week we had a few youngsters caught up prepared for the cold.
1/6/2007 We welcomed a new freind, Jenni, to our class. We are so happy she could join us. This week we will be taking our district CBM tests in math and reading.

I would also to remind everyone that we do not have school Friday, January 12th due to professional development meetings. We will begin taking ITBS tests on January 15th so be sure to make it a restful weekend. For those families who volunteered to provide our room with a healthy snack and drink during the testing, I will be sending home reminder notes this week. Thank you in advance for helping us stay energized during the tests by providing us with nutritious snacks.

 
1/3/2007 Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful and fun winter break. We will be jumping right back into our school routines with a quick revisit of our classroom expectations and then begin practicing for our ITBS tests which will be coming up the week of Jan. 15th. More information and helpful testing strategies will be coming.

I would like to thank all the family member who made it in for our reader's theater performance. The video tape will start makings it way to everyone's home beginning today. I would also like to thank everyone who provided us with the yummy snacks for our holiday celebration! Your help and support is so appreciated.

12/10/2006 We have another busy week ahead. The students are practicing their parts for our reader's theater performance. Watch for your invitation to be coming home this week.
Remember we have an early dismissal on Wednesday. Be sure students know where they are to go.
A note went home last week reminding students to start wearing their boots and snowpants for recess. Most of done a good job remembering the boots, but several have forgotten to bring their shoes along for inside the classroom. For those with P.E. shoes at school it isn't as much of a problem, but we have had a few sock footed individuals recently which can be unsafe. Please remind everyone to pack their shoes when they pack up their homework. Thank you for your help with this.
 
12/3/2006 Friday, December 8, is the annual Read Across America 2007. Our classroom will be participating with hundreds of other students across the country in taking time to read for the simple enjoyment of reading. Mr. Lyons will be our special guest reader to kick off our event. Parents and other family members are invited to join us in this pursuit of reading pleasure.

11/27/06 We are pleased to welcome a new friend to our classroom today! We hope Dylan will be happy joining us and welcome both he and his family to our community.

Last week we were able to reach the ceiling with our fish for Caught You Being Good. To celebrate this accomplishment we will be having a movie and snack on Friday. Congratulations class. Let's keep fishing!

I would like to thank all of you for coming in last week during conferences. I am so proud of the children's hard work and accomplishments! Thank you for the wonderful support and extra help you give your sons and daughters each day.

Students will be working toward a goal of one Children's Choice each month. We will have an ice cream sundae celebration in May for all students who have completed 10 books for the year.You can access this page from the student pages.

8/20/2007 Updated the schedule page to show new times for this school year. Also added our specials to the week at a glance.

8/14/2007 Fixed page set ups for many pages. Working on fixing the remaining pages since my mishap on Sunday.

8/9/2007 Added some new classroom links and updated the awards page. I am pleased to add the new awards we have just received. More updates coming.

7/29/2007 Teachers - I have added more teaching tools to the teacher page. Enjoy! Created a new page - Computer Projects. You'll find our online projects along with links to out materials on Quia.com. More updates coming in the next few days.

7/28/2007 I have totally redone the curriculum page. You will now find all subject areas on this page. I have broken it down to show what grade level expectations we will be doing each trimester. More updates coming in the next few days.
